This has happened to me and this is what I did to solve it. On the far right of the bottom screen you'll see what looks like a little person with their arms waved out. Click on it and you should see a pop up menu that includes "mute all sounds." It should read off, but if it says on, click on it to change it to off

My phone makes sounds OK (ringtones, music, etc), but NOT for text notifications.

* I'm using Messages (blue speech bubble on white background).  I think that's the "galaxy" app that @lavenderskyy mentioned on the S22 thread.

* I have "Do not disturb" turned ON, but on a schedule -- 10pm - 7am.  Other sounds work so I'm certain DND is not the problem.

* In Messages -> Settings -> Notifications, "Allow notifications" and "Allow sound and vibration" are turned on.

* In the android Settings -> Apps -> Messages, it has the same settings, also turned on.

* I don't see the "little person" @webnut mentioned.

What am I doing wrong?  This seems to be a very common problem -- maybe *I'm* not the one doing it wrong ...

Try this, go to settings, notifications, Advanced settings, and make sure Manage Notification categories for each app is toggled on. Go back to notifications main page, app notifications, scroll down to the blue bubble white background ( Google Messages) tap on notification categories, scroll down to allow notifications, make sure that is toggled on, then go to, incoming messages, make sure that is toggled on, tap on it, sound, pick your tone.

Individual contacts can be assigned a text tone too inside of Google Messages. Open Google Messages, tap on a contact, details, and scroll to notifications, sound pick a tone

Wow, maybe they could have added settings in 4 or 5 more places!?

Manage for each app was NOT on, but is now.  Notifications were already on.

Incoming messages... where is that?  I see Sounds and vibration -> Vibration sound for incoming calls, and that's already at full volume.

So far, still no sound for incoming texts.

After enabling the feature Robin612k mentioned, you can then go into your messaging app and set your messages tone there:

Launch Messages | Close all messages so that you are on the main screen | Person Icon (next to the search, and under the word Messages) | Message Settings | Notifications | Notification Categories | Incoming Messages

This screen will allow you to set your notification tone for the messaging app.  Make sure Allow notifications is set to on in the same screen where the Incoming Messages option is (this also should be on)

I did everything you both recommended.  I do have a sound notification on my laptop (using Google Messages on the laptop), but no notification on my phone.  Strangely, I sometimes get a notification sound when I go to Messages or similar -- but I don't think that sound is selected anywhere ??
