As @MrGhoul stated, it's likely a temporary error with Google's servers or an issue with your internet connection. You can try rebooting your phone and retrying and/or emptying the cache from the GMail app. You can also try using a web browser for access. On any case, your emails are not gone, they are just unavailable to you at the moment.
