My Google messenger is totally blank. I can't access any messages

Did you try to reset cache in Google messenger?

I didn't do that but I did update it. What happened was i deleted a picture and then everything was lost my entire app wiped all messages

Try to force stop app, reset data this time, restart phone and try Google message again.

Now how do I get the notification number to pop up to show how many messages come in? That has disappeared

In messages settings in notification you can choose how your messenger notify you. BTW. I'm glad you make it work.
