Connecting phone to tv

Trying to connect phone to tv using USB-C/HDMI cable so I can watch streamed shows (no wifi). I thought this was a simple plug and play...just change tv input to HDMI port. All I get is a blank screen  with AV/SV flashing in the upper right corner. What am I doing wrong?

Try this:
Plug the USB-C end into your phone.


Plug the HDMI end into the TV’s HDMI port.


Turn on the TV and select the HDMI input you connected to.

Your phone screen should appear on the TV (it may take a few seconds).

If it doesn’t, swipe down from the top of your phone- tap Smart View -select your TV or the HDMI option.
