Google messages typing bar unusually large but cannot shrink it

I can expand and shrink the actual texts and things, but not the typing bar area, only the font in it. It used to be a lot smaller but now it's very weird and annoying to look at. How do I change that?

Google purposely increased the size. You can't change it as it was a server-side update.

Have you tried just resizing the whole keyboard?
