I would venture to guess that OP is saying they want to theme the indicators rather than just showing/hiding them.

You know, I'm so glad I don't have to look at other people's phones.  With all the nightmarish mishmash of customizations I've seen in screenshots - they must be headache/eyestrain inducing visions. I imagine people wouldn't like mine, either, but at least I don't have to strain to see icons that blend in with wall paper and a screen full of app icon badge notifications.  And, I consider dark mode the biggest abomination of them all.  But, that is why we have customization options.

I run everything pretty close to stock. While I love having the ability to customize, I find that nothing ever looks quite as cohesive as the default.

I have a wallpaper I like and an icon pack, varefully chosen to look like the apps they are for and be easily seen on top of the background.

Current methods for icon pack application produce too many visual inconsistencies for my taste, so I stick with the stock icons. Currently digging the dynamic color wallpapers in one UI 8 beta. I use the gallery widget to rotate favorite photos on my home screen.

My eyesight isn't the worst, but it isnt great, either, and I find app icons harder to discern if they aren't set against mostly solid color/gradient walls.
