I would greatly appreciate if my earbuds could intelligently read my messages to me, rather than having to reach out to my phone to reply. Furthermore, it would be greatly appreciated if they could notify me of the messages while listening to my music.
It's not the buds that reads your messages, it's the phone. You have to enable the assistant and then give the proper command, as @Ellin stated. Buds are just dumb devices and don't do anything until a command is activated on the phone.
