I have a A50 since about 4 and a half years. I played Call of duty mobile in the past with no issues, but now I am very certain my game lags due to throttling.

My back cover's adhesive became loose as well, so I thought it's a good opportunity to clean my phone too. Is there something else I can also do to improve thermals?

If your phone has been overheating, that could very well have been the cause of the back of your phone loosening. You can download good guardians from the Galaxy store and check the thermal guardian to see if you had incidents of overheating. If it is overheating it's probably because the game takes a lot of energy. And if you play it often it does your battery and your phone no favors. So yes, I guess you can say the phone is showing its age

Could it be that an update cased the game to have higher system requirements, so an older chip can't run it as well?

Could be showing it's age or wear
